Mansion Greens Community Garden is pleased to invite you to an edible forest garden planting event on June 6th.
It has been our longtime dream to create a food forest/forest garden as an extension of our community garden, and this dream is now becoming a reality!
If you're unfamiliar with the concept, forest gardening is a low-maintenance sustainable gardening practice based on woodland ecosystems, that incorporates fruit and nut trees, shrubs, herbs, vines and perennial vegetables.
Mansion Greens Community Garden was recently awarded a grant from Tree Canada to install a large forest garden along the slope that borders the garden and are now ready to start planting!
The first step is to have a swale installed at the base of the slope, which is being completed by the City of Kitchener. Once the swale is complete, we will begin planting!
We have just placed an order for 18 trees and 30 shrubs that will be planted during our launch event on June 6th. We have just announced the details of the event via facebook (https://www.facebook.com/events/1424142321241285/) and are looking to involve as many members of the community as we can, including garden members, neighbours, representatives from Tree Canada, City staff, and the press.
Please join us in planting Kitchener's first Forest Garden!
